Apple Hill Hidden Gems: Part 3
So, we’d had a great first day in the Camino / Placerville area with two prior stops at wineries, both absolute finds! Could this day get any better?
Well, turns out it it could.
We ended up at Jack Russell Farm Brewery because my friend Rich really wanted to try their beers. My husband is always down for beer, so the two of us wives tagged along contented in our afternoon and our guys’ anticipation of beer-laden fun.
This brewery is on a working farm…and also features a tasting room with a selection of year-round and seasonal beers, ciders, meads and wines. The farm brewery has surrounding orchards and farmlands, yet has a grassy lawn adjoining the patio filled with umbrellas to beat the heavy sunshine of the region.
Both Rich and my husband are big beer fans. There were 12 types of beer and several ciders on the tasting menu, so the guys each got got a tasting flight of five each, effectively travelling through all but one of Jack Russell’s brews. I’m not a beer fan, so I watched them enjoy, share, and retaste their combined flights.
They had a great time, bought a few and vowed to go back and buy more.
This is what Rich and my husband tasted:
- Blueberry Pale Ale
- Captain Boomer’s IPA
- Irish Red
- Oatmeal Stout
- Vanilla Stout
- American Pilsner
- All-American Light Lager
- Tangerine
- Pale Ale
- Apple Ale
- Strong Blonde
- Pumpkin Ale
The cost of a flight of six tastings ran $15. My husbhand and Rich each got one and shared samples effectively blooming their six tastings into 12.
The men tasted, shared, and compared. They really enjoyed the IPAs and both stouts, particularly the Oatmeal Stout. I did taste one I really liked, the Tangerine Ale. Oh, that was lovely! My husband bought one can of this.
And by one can, I mean one large 24.5 Fl oz can. It’s huge!
Our car’s trunk was too full, so we limited ourselves in our purchases here, but we vowed to return, hitting this brewery first. So many great tasting craft beers and ciders the guys enjoyed. And I really liked the Tangerine. More please!
