About Auckland, New Zealand
Auckland, like many other cities around the world, has been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With lockdowns and restrictions affecting businesses and tourism, the city’s economy has taken a hit. While the country has made progress in controlling the spread of the virus, Auckland is still recovering from the impact of the pandemic.
One major challenge faced by many businesses in the city is the shortage of workers. While businesses are looking for staff to help meet demand, many people who left the city during the pandemic have not returned, creating a workforce shortage. This has put a strain on businesses, particularly those in the hospitality and tourism sectors, which rely heavily on the availability of workers.
When you’re visiting, please exercise empathy and patience with the staff. They are trying their best to assist you.
If you’re staying in Auckland central, you’ll see the acronym CBD a lot and it’s not the 420 kinds of CBD. It stands for Central Business District akin to downtown in the States.
While visiting multiple places in New Zealand, I noticed the diversity of birds and insects that I no longer see in the United States, such as bees and butterflies. This really speaks to the conservation ideal of New Zealand.
Easter Weekend
In New Zealand, Easter weekend is a time of celebration and relaxation. However, if you’re planning on enjoying a pint of beer during this time, you may be in for a surprise. Due to government regulations, many bars and restaurants are unable to serve alcohol without the purchase of a substantial meal during the Easter weekend. This rule is in effect from Good Friday to Easter Monday.
The regulation is designed to discourage excessive drinking and promote a safe and responsible atmosphere during the holiday weekend. While it may be frustrating for some beer drinkers, it’s an important measure to ensure that everyone can enjoy the weekend safely and responsibly.
If you’re planning on going out for a pint during Easter weekend in New Zealand, it’s a good idea to check with the establishment beforehand to see if they have any special requirements or restrictions in place. And if you do have to order a substantial meal along with your drink, why not take the opportunity to sample some of the delicious food that New Zealand has to offer?
Having said that and this might change in the future, here’s a hack, the rules apply to restaurants, but it does not apply to bars in hotel establishments. So grab a pint of beer in the hotel with no lunch or dinner required!
Best Airline to Fly to New Zealand
Before I get to the airline, I highly recommend you employ the plastic wrapping services they have now in the airport. This will help in protecting your baggage during the baggage claim process and will provide an easy visual in the conveyor belt when you’re ready to pick it up! Now to the airline…
Ah, Air New Zealand – the pride of Kiwi hospitality! For the most part, this is your de-facto choice.
From the moment you step on board, you know you’re in for a treat. The crew is always so friendly and welcoming, with that classic Kiwi charm that makes you feel right at home. They go out of their way to make sure you’re comfortable and have everything you need for the flight.
One of my favorite things about Air New Zealand is their in-flight entertainment. With a huge selection of movies, TV shows, and music to choose from, you’ll never be bored. The TV and movie selections are about 1 step behind what you would get in the states. Overall, still a good collection. I was able to binge-watch some of Christopher Nolan’s works.
Of course, no Air New Zealand flight is complete without a taste of their delicious food and drink. Whether you’re in the mood for a hot meal or a snack, they’ve got you covered. And their wine selection is second to none – after all, New Zealand is known for its amazing wines!
But what really sets Air New Zealand apart is its commitment to sustainability. They’re always looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact, from using more eco-friendly materials to investing in biofuels. It’s great to see a company that cares about the planet as much as they care about its customers.
All in all, riding Air New Zealand is a fun and relaxing experience that I’d recommend to anyone. So if you’re planning a trip to New Zealand, be sure to book with Air New Zealand – you won’t be disappointed!

One of the few places that serve Murphy’s Stout. Murphy’s Stout is a rich and flavorful Irish dry stout that is popular both in Ireland and around the world. It is brewed by the Murphy’s Brewery in Cork, Ireland, which has been in operation since 1856.
Murphy’s Stout is known for its smooth and velvety texture, which is achieved through a process known as nitrogenation. Instead of using carbon dioxide to carbonate the beer, nitrogen is used, which creates smaller bubbles and a creamier texture.
The beer has a deep black color and a thick, creamy head. It has a complex flavor profile that includes notes of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt, with a hint of sweetness balanced by a bitter finish. The beer is medium-bodied and has a relatively low alcohol content of around 4%.
Murphy’s Stout is a versatile beer that pairs well with a variety of foods, including grilled meats, stews, and hearty soups. It is also a popular ingredient in recipes, such as Guinness or Murphy’s Stout beef stew.
In recent years, Murphy’s Stout has gained a following around the world, particularly among those who appreciate a well-crafted stout. While it may not be as well-known as some other Irish stouts, such as Guinness, it is a beloved brand among those who have had the pleasure of trying it.
Beer-battered fish and chips
The fish and chips at Danny Doolans is absolutely amazing. One of the few places I would say knows how to do a fish and chips right. The use of Monteith’s Golden beer batter is a great touch, as it adds a rich and complex flavor to the dish. The fries are double-fried so that you get the crispy and soft texture. The peas are often overlooked, but they sure know how to spice up the peas. It is mixed with mashed peas followed by garlic and chives. I can see myself just eating an appetizer of the peas!
Nuthin’ beats nachos
The nachos at the restaurant were okay. The toppings, including melted aged cheddar, sour cream, salsa, and beef chili, sounded promising, but the overall flavor leaned toward the sweet end. The salsa was a bit too sweet, and there seemed to be some seasoning in the beef chili that contributed to the overall sweetness of the dish.
The sweetness in the dish could come from a variety of factors. Perhaps the salsa used was sweeter than expected, or the beef chili had a hint of sweetness in its seasoning. Additionally, some types of aged cheddar can have a slightly sweet flavor profile, which could have contributed to the overall sweetness of the dish
While it’s disappointing that the nachos weren’t quite what you were expecting, it’s important to note that taste preferences are subjective and can vary from person to person. Some people may enjoy a sweeter take on nachos, while others may prefer a more savory or spicy version.
After spicing it up with some hot sauce, the nachos tasted way better. It is possible that this is the preference of how Kiwis like it. Apologies if that’s the case.
Beef and Murphy’s
Part of the pie and pint menu item, you’ll get a free pint or glass of house wine to go with this entree.
If you’re a meat lover, then the beef and Murphy’s pie at the restaurant is a must-try. This dish is the epitome of comfort food, with tender Angus beef in a rich Murphy’s gravy that is perfectly complemented by the Irish cheddar and flaky puff pastry topping.
The beef in the pie is incredibly tender and flavorful, with a rich, savory taste that is perfectly balanced by the Murphy’s gravy. The use of Murphy’s adds a unique twist to the dish, with its notes of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt giving the beef an extra depth of flavor that is truly satisfying.
Topped with a generous helping of Irish cheddar and flaky puff pastry, this pie is an absolute delight. The Irish cheddar provides a sharp and tangy flavor that cuts through the richness of the beef and Murphy’s gravy, while the flaky puff pastry adds a satisfying crunch and texture to every bite.

We arrived in between so we only tried the appetizers. 🙁 We tried the crab cakes and prawns served in a shrimp cocktail fashion. Instead of ketchup, it is served with a bed of salad and dressing. The staff are extremely polite and knowledgeable about your food. Even though the kitchen is busy, the staff interacted with us with grace and politeness. Also, you don’t have to pay extra for the best seats in the house! Seguely slightly, here are the apps and entrees we tried:

About 1/2 a block from SkyTower. Friday and Saturday at 7:45 pm they have a belly dance performance that lasts about 30 minutes. Be sure to call ahead on the belly dance schedule. We were pretty full that day so we only had one dish in this restaurant.
Lamb Moussaka (gluten-free)
Oven baked potato, lamb mince, eggplant, bechamel sauce topped with parmesan and mozzarella cheese, tomato, and garlic yogurt sauce served with salad and tzatziki.
The Lamb Moussaka at Cafe Midnight Express may have a slight variation from the traditional Greek recipe. The addition of oven-baked potatoes, which are more commonly found in British Shepherd’s Pie gives the dish a more British-inspired taste. Not part of the menu, but green peas were found inside the moussaka. It’s possible that the restaurant made this variation to appeal to their English clientele, who may be more familiar with Shepherd’s Pie than Moussaka. Regardless, it was a delicious dish that combines savory lamb mince, creamy bechamel sauce, and flavorful spices.

I tried The fish, prawn, and wet al pastor tacos are some of the most popular dishes on the menu, and they definitely live up to their reputation. Each bite bursts with fresh and bold flavors that are true to Mexican cuisine.

I had the pleasure of visiting Koel Cafe, located within the new lobby development at The Maritime Museum. The cafe boasts a beautiful setting, with world-class views of New Zealand’s entertainment capital. From the moment I walked in, the team was dedicated to providing the absolute best in coffee and fresh food.
I was immediately impressed with their coffee partner, Kokako, and their herbal teas from Forage and Bloom – both local providers at the top of their game. The coffee was excellent, with a smooth and rich flavor, and the herbal tea was fragrant and refreshing.
When it comes to the food, Koel Cafe offers a range of fresh and delicious options, perfect for a quick bite or a leisurely meal. I highly recommend the ham and cheese croissant, which was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor.
The coffee is also amazing, I’ve been having a hard time getting strong caffeinated coffee in Auckland, this is definitely one of the places that do coffee right IMO.

Whether you’re a French cuisine connoisseur or just looking for a unique dining experience, Origine is a must-visit restaurant in Auckland.
For best bang for your buck, the chef’s menu is the way to go, which features 3 appetizers, a main course, and dessert.
Here is the food we tried:
Faux Foie Gras
I can confidently say that the Faux Foie Gras at Origine restaurant is an absolute must-try for anyone visiting Auckland. This dish is a true work of art, both in presentation and taste. The savory, buttery flavor of the duck liver parfait is perfectly balanced with the sweetness of the Sauternes jelly, and the truffled brioche provides the perfect texture to complement the smoothness of the parfait.
What is truly impressive about this dish is how well it captures the rich, umami flavor of traditional foie gras, without actually containing any. The dish is beautifully presented, with a perfect balance of flavors and textures.
Gravlax de saumon
Truly a work of art. The Cardrona gin-cured Big Glory Bay salmon is beautifully presented with dill, grapefruit, and orange, creating a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors. The salmon itself is perfectly buttery and fatty, delicately salted with just the right amount of gin infusion that adds a subtle depth of flavor. The fresh creme fraiche on top enhances the creaminess of the salmon, and the dish as a whole is simply divine. Every bite is a burst of umami, leaving you wanting more. This dish is definitely a must-try at Origine restaurant, perfect as an appetizer or a light meal. Highly recommended for any seafood lover out there!
Soupe à l’oignon (French Onion Soup)
The Soupe à l’oignon is a must-try for any French cuisine lover. The first thing that hits you is the aroma, the deep, rich onion flavor combined with a savory umami undertone. The broth is well-seasoned, and the caramelized onions are cooked to perfection. The oxtail toastie is an interesting twist to the traditional French onion soup, adding an additional meaty flavor and a textural contrast with the crunchy toast. However, I did wish there was a layer of melted cheese on top of the soup to add another dimension to the dish. Overall, the Soupe à l’oignon is a well-executed classic dish with a unique touch that will leave you satisfied and warmed to the core.
Terrine du jour
The Terrine du jour was a lovely dish that truly showcased the quality of the ingredients used. The terrine had a clean, subtle flavor that was complemented beautifully by the accompanying baguette, house mustard, and pickles. The texture of the terrine was soft and velvety, making it a pleasure to eat.
While the simplicity of the dish was a refreshing change from some of the more heavily spiced dishes on the menu, I couldn’t help but wish for a bit more complexity in the flavor profile. Some warm spices such as peppercorns would have added an extra layer of depth to the dish.
Poisson du jour (Grilled Fish)
The poisson du jour is a true showcase of the quality of the ingredients and the expertise of the kitchen. The woodfired fish is cooked to perfection, crispy and slightly charred on the edges while still tender and moist inside. The flavors of the fish are enhanced by the delicate Noilly Prat beurre blanc sauce, which adds a subtle richness and a hint of nuttiness. The dish is beautifully balanced with the addition of greens and toasted almonds, which provide a fresh crunch and a nutty aroma. The fennel adds a delicate hint of anise that complements the fish perfectly. Overall, the dish is clean, light, and refreshing, making it the perfect choice for a summer meal. The attention to detail and the quality of the ingredients are evident in every bite, making this dish a true delight for any seafood lover.
Épaule d’agneau (Lamb osyter shoulder)
I had the pleasure of indulging in the Épaule d’agneau Lumina and it was truly a delight for the senses. The 500g roasted Lumina lamb oyster shoulder was cooked to perfection, with tender and juicy meat that was packed with umami flavor. The dish was beautifully paired with roasted capsicum, which added a subtle sweetness to the overall taste, and the black olive jam provided a nice contrast with its slightly bitter notes. The dish was very grounding. The combination of flavors was deep and heavy, making it a truly indulgent meal. The portion size was generous and perfect for sharing. I would highly recommend this dish to anyone looking for a truly satisfying meal at Origine.

Here are the dishes we tried:
Te Matuku Oyster
The Te Matuku Oyster is an absolute delight for any seafood lover. Sourced from the beautiful Waiheke Island, this oyster is a true representation of New Zealand’s coastal cuisine. The first bite transports you to the ocean with its briny, fresh, and mineral-rich flavor.
What makes this dish stand out is the perfectly balanced accompaniments. The apple marigold ice brings a refreshing burst of sweetness, while the yuzu sake adds a hint of tangy citrus that complements the oyster perfectly. The texture of the oyster is soft and succulent, with a clean finish that leaves your palate craving more.
The presentation of this dish is simply beautiful. The delicate oyster shell is served on a bed of ice, with the apple marigold ice and yuzu sake elegantly placed on top. The combination of colours and textures creates a stunning visual experience that is almost too beautiful to eat.
Kingfish
The kingfish is a true masterpiece that is sure to delight even the most discerning palate. Freshly caught from the Waikato and Ruakaka regions, the kingfish is the perfect canvas for Chef Ben Bayly’s culinary artistry. The smoked eel mortadella adds a subtle smokiness that complements the delicate flavors of the fish, while the cucumber piccalilli provides a bright and tangy contrast.
Garnished with shiso leaves and breakfast radish, the dish is a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. The kingfish itself is beautifully cooked, with a firm and meaty texture that melts in your mouth. The flavor is clean, fresh, and perfectly balanced, showcasing the pure taste of the ocean.
Hot-Smoked Japanese Quail
The hot-smoked Japanese quail dish at Ahi is a work of art. From the moment the plate is set in front of you, you can tell that every element has been thoughtfully crafted and expertly executed. The quail is perfectly grilled with a golden brown skin that gives way to tender, smoky meat underneath. The parsnip sauerkraut provides a tangy contrast to the rich flavor of the quail, while the nettle chimichurri adds a bright, herbaceous note.
The grilled calabash and brassica offer a satisfying crunch to the dish, and the presentation is simply beautiful. The dish is a true feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds, with vibrant colors and textures that all come together in perfect harmony. It’s clear that every ingredient has been carefully chosen for its unique contribution to the dish.

If you’re looking for a culinary adventure that fuses the vibrant flavors of Latin America with the bold spices of Asia, then Inca Ponsonby is the place for you.
I had the pleasure to meet with Chef Nic Watt when I ate at Masu, who is well-known for his culinary prowess, he recommended me to his other restaurant, INCA Ponsonby. Drawing from his travels throughout South America and East Asia, Nic has expertly crafted dishes that are a fusion of the two culinary worlds.
Like Masu, this place has a tasting menu, “Let Us Indulge You” and here are my thoughts below.
Let us Indulge You – Tasting Menu
Let me paint a picture for you – imagine indulging in a feast fit for royalty, based on two people sharing. At Inca, this dream can become a reality.
Follow the scorpion to dive into a world of flavor, where Latin American and Asian cuisine blend together seamlessly. Let’s start with the guacamole INCA style – a spicy, tangy blend of jalapeño and coriander, served with crispy corn chips that add the perfect crunch.
Next up, the grande ceviche and sashimi platter is a true standout. You’ll get to savor two selections of ceviche and three selections of sashimi, served over ice with a side of rock melon and shichimi kimchi for a burst of refreshing flavors.
But that’s not all – the jumbo tempura prawn with wasabi pea seasoning and aji mayo is a dish you won’t forget anytime soon. The market fish tiradito with charred cucumber, Szechuan chili oil, black vinegar, and garlic chips is another must-try.
And let’s not forget about the ember-roasted black cod with anticucho miso and pickled daikon – it’s a melt-in-your-mouth experience that you won’t want to end. The baby gem salad with green papaya, mint, coriander, aji honey and lime dressing, and spiced pepitas is the perfect complement to the rich flavors of the main dishes.
The char-grilled eggplant with ancho miso caramel and furikake is another dish that’s full of surprises. And of course, you can’t miss out on the grande dessert platter, which includes a tasting of INCA’s most decadent treats, as well as ice cream and sorbet served with fresh seasonal cut fruit.
In short, Inca’s feast is a culinary adventure that you don’t want to miss. So, gather your loved ones and let the scorpion lead you on a journey of flavor that you won’t forget!

tel: 09 817 7348
This bakery is a bit out of the way from Auckland CBD, but well-worth the trip for extremely delicious meat pies. The price is overly cheap compare to the tourist trap. We purchased 3 meat pies and 2 drinks and only set us back by ~$18 USD. Each meat pie is an entree in its own!
If you’re out in the suburbs, be sure to give this bakery a try!
1947 Eatery

1947eatery.co.nz
With a deep-rooted passion for food and Indian culture, owner Areeb has transformed Auckland’s Indian culinary scene with his multi-award winning restaurant.
What sets 1947 Eatery apart is its contemporary take on authentic Indian cuisine. Areeb’s fusion of traditional and modern flavors is a feast for the senses, with dishes that are both innovative and authentic.
The restaurant’s menu is inspired by the bustling streets of Bombay, with street vendor snacks that are both flavorful and colorful. And the authentic Dum biriyanis from the Palaces of Nizam are a true standout – they’re cooked to perfection and packed with flavor.
Note, this restaurant can get quite busy and chaotic, please be patient with the wait staff. Also, the chef sets the spicy level, don’t worry about being too spicy, it should be just right and palatable.
Here are the food items we tried:
Bang Bang Butter Chicken – a fresh and exciting twist on the famous star of every Indian menu, Buttered Chicken. The chicken is tender and juicy, with a flavor that’s rich and complex. And the sauce is truly outstanding – it’s creamy and decadent, with just the right amount of spice.
Grilled Salmon – perfectly cooked, with a charcoal char that gives it a unique smoky flavor. And the spiced seasoning adds just the right amount of heat, without overpowering the delicate flavor of the fish. Be sure to try it with the in-house mint chutney. It’s fresh and vibrant, with a flavor that’s both sweet and savory.
Combine it with the Zeera rice, a glass of local white New Zealand wine, and you should be good to go for the evening!

Their ‘east meets west’ cuisine is a delightful blend of classic street foods from China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand, which means you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.
Their menu features a range of dishes that are bursting with flavor, including their homemade massaman and red curry pastes that are made from scratch, and their fresh oysters and sashimi with freshly ground wasabi root. The best part? White + Wong’s isn’t bound by any rules or traditions, so they’re always experimenting with new flavors and techniques to deliver innovative dishes that will tantalize your taste buds.
They have a few tasting menus to choose from, be aware you’ll need a minimum party of 4 else you’ll need to order a la carte.
Read below about the food we tried.
Sashimi of kingfish – The Kingfish is sliced thinly and served raw, making it the perfect vehicle for the bold flavors of the other ingredients. The heirloom tomatoes add a sweet and juicy element, while the chilli provides a subtle kick of heat. The lime adds a tangy acidity that perfectly balances the sweetness, and the coconut cream adds a creamy and rich component that brings the dish together. The dish is finished off with a sprinkle of fresh coriander, which adds a fragrant and herbaceous note that ties everything together. Each bite is a harmonious blend of flavors and textures that dance on your tongue, leaving you wanting more.
Wagyu beef shu mai – The dumplings are made with a delicate wrapper that encases a filling of premium Wagyu beef, shiitake mushrooms, and cumin. The beef is tender and juicy, and the shiitake mushrooms add an earthy and savory note. The cumin provides a warm and aromatic flavor that complements the other ingredients perfectly. The shumai is served hot and steamy. Each bite is a burst of flavor and texture that will leave you wanting more.
Peking Duck – The Peking Duck is prepared using a traditional method that involves marinating the duck in a special blend of spices and then roasting it until the skin is crispy and golden brown. The meat is tender and juicy, and the skin is crispy and flavorful, providing the perfect contrast in texture. The duck is served with thin slices of cucumber and spring onion, which add a refreshing and crunchy element to the dish. The hoisin sauce is the perfect accompaniment, providing a sweet and tangy flavor that complements the duck beautifully.
Massaman curry – the Massaman curry of lamb shoulder at this restaurant is a dish that is not to be missed. This hearty and flavorful dish is a perfect example of how well-crafted curries can elevate humble ingredients into something truly extraordinary. The lamb shoulder is slow-cooked to perfection, resulting in a tender and succulent meat that falls apart with a fork. The curry sauce is rich and aromatic, with hints of cinnamon, cumin, and other spices that add depth and complexity to the dish. The gourmet agria potatoes are the perfect complement to the lamb, adding a hearty and earthy flavor that brings the dish together. The peanuts and crispy shallots provide a satisfying crunch and a subtle sweetness that perfectly balance the savory elements of the curry.
Be sure to pair this with a nice local New Zealand Chardonnay!

Man O’ War Winery

We did lunch and wine tasting in this winery. Situated on Waiheke Island, it is the easternmost winery on the island. You can purchase a Man O’ War bus ticket that will take you to the winery from the Matiatia Ferry Station and back. Be sure to check their website for the bus schedule and pricing. You can also take a taxi ride that will cost you $80-$100 each way. If you’re flying in with a helicopter be sure to check with the winery for further instructions. This is not a joke.
The winery offers 2 tastings, the standard, and the Kulta tasting. The Kulta tasting is considered the higher-end tasting.
After your wine tasting, you can buy a bottle (or two) and enjoy a nice picnic lunch overlooking the calm and tranquil bay.

They have 2 tastings you can do, standard and premium. The premium tasting allows you to sample wines that are exclusively local to the Waiheke region. They also have a kitchen that serves lunch and dinner on selected weeknights. Be sure to check on their website for up-to-date information.

This vineyard has everything. Eat, wine, stay, and even wedding events!
Let me introduce you to the dynamic duo of Robyn and Nicholas Jones, who dared to dream big and accomplished even bigger! Back in 1992, when Nicholas was a mere 28 years old and Robyn was just 27, they decided to break the monotony of their routine Auckland jobs and do something radical.
And so, they bought a lifestyle block on Waiheke Island – an untouched piece of land with breathtaking sea views, bursting with potential and endless possibilities. Their plan was as simple as it was audacious – establish a vineyard, cultivate the land, savor the fruits of their labor, and live the life they had always dreamed of.
Fast forward to today, and the couple still owns and operates their incredible property, aptly named Mudbrick. Their journey has been anything but predictable, with its fair share of ups and downs, but it’s all been worth it. The vineyard is thriving, and the wine is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion.
The wines here are on par with Napa wines, which is the style that I prefer. Before or after your wine tasting, feel free to walk around the estate and grab a bite at the bistro or restaurant and soak in the stunning ocean view with the Auckland skyline in the background!

About 2 blocks awa from Sky City is the Dragon Boat restaurant. If you want dim sums that are tasty and decently priced, this is the place. All the dim sums are classicly created with none of the modern-day dim sum twists. I prefer the traditional recipe. I tried the shu mai, shrimp dumplings, shrimp with chives, and beef meatballs. All reminded me of the teahouses that I frequented when I was a kid. If I’m ever in the area, I will try this place again.

Perched atop Auckland’s Sky Tower, the dining room rotates once every hour, providing a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the city, the Hauraki Gulf, and beyond. It’s a feast for the eyes and the senses, and one that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.
But it’s not just the views that make Orbit such a special place. The restaurant also offers a modern dining experience that’s as relaxed as it is inviting. The atmosphere is open and welcoming, making it the perfect spot for a romantic dinner for two or a night out with friends.
And the food? Well, let’s just say that it’s kiwi-inspired cuisine at its very best. The à la carte menu is bursting with the freshest local and seasonal produce, expertly prepared by a team of culinary maestros. From succulent seafood to juicy steaks, there’s something for everyone to savor and enjoy.
Here are the foods we tried:
Citrus-Braised Pork Belly – The dish features a succulent pork belly that’s been braised to perfection, resulting in a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness that’s hard to resist. Accompanied by a creamy cauliflower purée, the dish is elevated even further by the addition of seasonal greens and tart pickled mustard seeds. And let’s not forget about the crisp, sweet apple slices that add a delightful crunch and a burst of freshness to each bite. To tie everything together, the dish is finished off with a luscious jus that’s both sweet and tangy, bringing out the best in every ingredient. Each element of the dish is thoughtfully prepared and perfectly balanced, resulting in a culinary masterpiece that’s sure to satisfy even the most discerning palate.
Smoked Salmon Tortellini – The dish features a tender and perfectly cooked tortellini, filled with a delicious smoked salmon mixture that’s bursting with flavor. But what really takes this dish to the next level is the shellfish sauce, which adds a rich, savory depth of flavor that perfectly complements the delicate salmon. The rouille, a garlicky and slightly spicy sauce that provides just the right amount of kick. The dish is topped with the luxurious ora king roe, which adds a touch of indulgence and a beautiful pop of color. And the radish slices provide a refreshing crunch that ties everything together.
Butcher’s Cut of the Day, Rib Eye Steak – I was excited to sink my teeth into the Butcher’s Cut of the Day, a juicy and perfectly cooked Rib Eye Steak. The steak was cooked to perfection, medium-rare, with a gorgeous sear on the outside and a tender and succulent interior that practically melted in my mouth. The potato gratin was creamy and indulgent, with just the right amount of cheesy goodness. The sticky shallots added a lovely sweetness that perfectly complemented the savory flavors of the steak, while the charred cabbage provided a satisfying crunch and a hint of smokiness. The mushrooms, which added a rich earthiness that rounded out the dish. The steak was served with a luscious jus that brought all the flavors together in perfect harmony.
Hawke’s Bay Lamb Rump – The lamb was cooked to perfection, with a crispy exterior that gave way to a tender and succulent interior. But what really took this dish to the next level were the accompanying roasted root vegetables. Each vegetable was cooked to perfection, with a lovely caramelization that brought out their natural sweetness and provided a delightful contrast to the rich flavors of the lamb. The peas added a pop of freshness and a burst of color, while the watercress pesto provided a unique and delicious twist on the traditional mint sauce. The rosemary jus, which tied all the flavors together and provided a lovely depth of flavor.
Lemon Orchard – The dish features a delightful lemon confit that’s bursting with zesty citrus flavor. The confit is perfectly complemented by the lemon and lime sorbet, which is both sweet and tart and provides a refreshing contrast to the richness of the confit. The ginger crumb, which adds a delightful crunch and a hint of spice. Together, these elements create a dessert that’s both complex and harmonious, with each flavor perfectly complementing the others.
Matcha Pebble – As the name suggests, this is literally a green pebble on the plate. A lovely matcha crunch that provides a satisfying texture and a subtle earthy flavor. The crunch is perfectly balanced by the bright and tangy citrus, which adds a refreshing contrast and a burst of flavor. The roasted white sesame, which provides a nutty richness that ties everything together.
With our food, we paired with 2 cocktails, Blue Harvest, and Pavlova. Both very lovely and fun drinks!

The performance is incredibly entertaining, featuring beautiful Māori songs and dances, including the mesmerizing poi dance and traditional Māori weapons. The highlight of the show is undoubtedly the spine-tingling version of the world-famous haka, which is a truly unforgettable experience.
What I particularly enjoyed about this performance is how immersive and engaging it is. The performers are incredibly talented and skilled, and they do an excellent job of bringing the Māori culture to life through their performances. The show is also incredibly informative, with the performers providing insightful commentary on the history and significance of the different aspects of the performance.

Sky Tower
Victoria Street West, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010
Tel: 09 363 6000
skycityauckland.co.nz/sky-tower/
Your trip will not be complete if you don’t visit the Sky Tower. This tourist attraction is a must-see if you’re in Auckland.
The Sky Tower in Auckland is not just a magnificent structure that graces the city skyline, but also an incredible destination for thrill-seekers. For those who want to take things to the next level, the Sky Tower offers two adrenaline-fueled activities – the SkyWalk and the SkyJump.
The SkyWalk involves walking on a narrow platform around the outside of the Sky Tower, while harnessed to an overhead rail system. It’s not for the faint of heart, as you’ll be 192 meters above the ground with no handrails! But for those who dare to take the walk, the experience is truly unforgettable. The views of the city from this vantage point are simply breathtaking, and the sense of achievement after completing the SkyWalk is indescribable.
If you’re looking for an even bigger thrill, the SkyJump is the ultimate challenge. It involves jumping off the Sky Tower and freefalling for 11 seconds before landing safely on the ground. It’s the only jump of its kind in the world that takes place from such a height, and it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted. But for those brave enough to take the leap, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
If you want to stay indoor (like myself), a ticket will get you to the 50th and 60th floors, the highest indoor height. At this height, you’ll be able to take glorious panoramic photos of the city. You can also purchase Sky Slide, a VR experience where you slide down at the top of Sky Tower, which will set you back approximately $15 NZD per person.

I highly recommend a visit to Wētā Workshop Unleashed for an unforgettable journey into the world of movie-making. This Auckland attraction is a must-visit for movie enthusiasts, with its immersive 90-minute tour that explores three original film concepts – a horror, fantasy epic, and sci-fi adventure.
Our tour guide is highly entertaining, I would recommend you tour with the janitor. Call ahead to find out when he’s on. Nice guy, knowledgeable, and funny!
What sets Wētā Workshop Unleashed apart is its attention to detail, authenticity, and interactivity. You’ll see firsthand how movies are made, with behind-the-scenes access to the creation of props, costumes, and special effects. You can also interact with life-size models of creatures and characters, which were created by Wētā Workshop.
As someone who has visited Hobbiton, I can confidently say that a trip to New Zealand wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Wētā Workshop. It’s an opportunity to experience the magic of movie-making up close and personal and to appreciate the incredible talent and creativity that goes into bringing our favorite stories to life.
Also, their gift shop is much more immersive than Hobbiton. If you’re looking for authentic Lord of the Rings collectibles, this is the place to grab em. Limited edition products are also available via the gift shop.
Various Stores We Visited Auckland
77 Convenience Store
Found a couple of these stores in the general Auckland touristy area. If you need anything such as snacks, alcohol, smoke, batteries, and etc. This is the place. Think of it as a 7-11 store. Most of the store owners are very matter-of-fact to straight-up rude and mean. Don’t expect any friendly chit-chat from them. My recommendation is to get your stuff and get out.
Good to Go Market
63 Albert Street, CBD Auckland
09 379 2428
Selections are larger than 77 Convenience stores, located across from Shakespeare pub. Another option if you need any food, toiletries, and etc.
Countdown Market
9283 Auckland Victoria St West
09 308 9249
If you’re from the west coast of the United States, this is your typical Albertson, Safeway, Vons, Lucky’s and etc. Here you’ll find comprehensive vegetables, meat, dry goods, and etc. You should be able to find everything here. Checkout is self-checkout and be sure to bring your own bags. It’s not common for New Zealand businesses to offer bags.
Traveling to Rotorua from Auckland
One thing you’ll quickly realize if you want to travel to Auckland’s vicinity tourist attractions is that it costs a lot of money to get to point A to point B. For example, Hobbiton is about 2.5 hour drive, and Rotorua is 3.5. Renting a car would be a good option compared to hiring a private driver (the going rate is about ~$400 NZD for half a day), but if you’re used to driving on the left side, you’ll need to get used to the chirality since they drive on the right.
Rotorua was one of the places we wanted to visit due to the geothermal activity in the area, and we really want to dip in the hot spring to soak up all the minerals New Zealand has to offer. Since we didn’t want to drive due to the chirality issue, booking a short flight + lodging was the perfect option for us. In the end, the pricing delta was only a few hundred dollars, and we got to stay for 4 days in Rotorua vs the cost for a private driver just for one day, yes, ONE DAY. I highly recommend you explore this package option if you want to visit Rotorua from Auckland.
Traveling Regional Airport Rotorua (ROT)
Traveling from Auckland Airport (AKL) to Rotorua Regional Airport (ROT) reminds me of flying during the pre-9/11 days. No security checkpoints, show your boarding pass and go. Having said that, you probably don’t need to arrive at the airport super early. Note, the plane is generally smaller, which means small overhead. Be prepared to check in your luggage. You’ll most likely be on a propeller plane, so you’ll feel some bump in the air, but it’s not too bad. Flight time is about 45 minutes.
Rotorua Lodging – Pullman Rotorua
1135 Arawa Street, Rotorua 3010
tel: 07 343 9750
www.pullmanrotorua.com
We stayed in Pullman Rotorua because of the following reasons:
- Center of Rotorua CBD
- Walkable distance to most local eats
- Walkable distance to Polynesian Spa
- Walkable distance to Lake Rotorua
The staff here are very nice and attentive. Free Wifi, but if you choose to use an ethernet jack, be sure to check with the staff to see if the jack in your room is live.
On the ground floor, they have a very nice grill restaurant called, Barrel and Grill. The prices may be a bit high for some folks. We tasted their chicken karaage and burrata and they were tasty for a quick afternoon nosh.
I would advise staying away from Fenton Street during the evening since the hotel is about half a block away. As long as you’re staying in a well-lighted area and in a touristy location, you should be fine. As always, be smart and cognizant of your surroundings regardless of where you’re at.

A gastropub that serves delicious and enormous dishes along with high-quality beers on tap. The Goat’s Tribe plate can easily feed 6+ people in my opinion even though the menu mentioned 2-4+.
About the dish, a mouthwatering combination of various meat and sides left me thoroughly satisfied.
The first thing that struck me about the Goat’s Tribe dish was the variety of options available. The chicken wings were perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, while the sticky pork ribs were tender and succulent with a delectable sweet glaze. The slow-braised brisket was equally impressive, melting in my mouth with every bite.
The spicy lamb kofta was another standout dish, bursting with flavor and perfectly seasoned. The sides were equally impressive – the onion rings and potato wedges were crispy and well-seasoned, while the garlic Turkish bread was warm and fluffy.
To balance out the hearty meat dishes, the slaw provided a refreshing and crisp element to the meal, while the chili relish, tzatziki, and chipotle aioli added a tangy and spicy kick to each bite.
Make sure you grab a local New Zealand pint to go along with this meal!

As a foodie, there’s nothing quite like a seafood platter that’s bursting with flavor and freshness. And let me tell you, the seafood platter at Urban Gusto is an absolute must-try.
First up, the South Island Clams is a true standout. They’re cooked to perfection and have a briny flavor that pairs perfectly with the other items on the platter.
The grilled calamari is another highlight. It’s tender and flavorful, with just the right amount of char. And the prawn skewers are succulent and juicy, with a subtle sweetness that lingers on your tongue.
But what really sets this platter apart is the smoked kahawai. It’s a local delicacy that’s full of flavor, with a smoky richness that’s hard to beat. And when you pair it with the toasted focaccia, it’s a match made in heaven.
Be sure to pair this with a glass of local New Zealand white wines or a pint of beer!

As the national leader in kiwi husbandry, egg incubation systems, hatching techniques, and kiwi chick rearing, the National Kiwi Hatchery is the ultimate destination for anyone interested in kiwi conservation. During the hatching season (September-March), you get to experience a truly unique opportunity to witness kiwi eggs being incubated, the hatching process, and the growth of newly hatched kiwi chicks.
These experiences are not only educational but also thought-provoking, as you learn about the challenges facing the survival of these iconic birds and the steps the hatchery are taking to protect them. As the largest and most successful kiwi hatchery in the world, their mission is to ensure the survival of kiwi for generations to come.
If you’re planning to visit outside of hatching season, don’t worry! While there may not be eggs or chicks to see on site, you can still observe the resident adult kiwi foraging in our Nocturnal House. So, whether it’s during hatching season or not, a visit to the National Kiwi Hatchery is an experience not to be missed!
We visited during the month of April and surprisingly, 4 eggs came to the hatchery! We got to witness how the experts meticulously record and take care of the eggs. It was truly an amazing experience if you’re a scientist or biologist. Our tour guide is amazingly funny and sarcastic, truly entertaining and unique experience.
Unfortunately, you won’t get to take photos of the Kiwis in the nocturnal house. Here’s a hack, go to the Auckland zoo and you can take as many photos as you want if you can find them.

If you’re looking for a thrilling and unique experience, look no further than ZORB Rotorua. This exciting activity involves rolling downhill in a giant inflatable sphere, a craze that was invented by two Kiwi blokes, Andrew Akers and Dwane van der Sluis, in 1994. The idea originated as a way of walking on water, but when they realized they couldn’t control it, they started rolling people down hills instead.
Zorbing became so popular that it entered the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in 2001, defined as “a sport in which a participant is secured inside an inner capsule in a large, transparent ball which is then rolled along the ground or down hills”. With the help of two other investors, ZORB Limited was created, and they began commercializing ball rolling and setting up their own franchise network around the world.
We selected the four-ride combo package which includes all four tracks, including the Straight Track, Sidewinder Track, Big Air, and MEGA Track.
You can ride in tandem with your significant other or solo. In between tracks, you can enjoy the hot tub and sauna. You don’t have to rush yourself at all! The staff is extremely nice and patient.
Here’s a hack, when you’re inside the ball, have your back pointing down the hill akin to sliding backward. You’ll thank me for this! 😉
Mitai Maori Village
196 Fairy Springs Road, Fairy Springs, Rotorua 3015, New Zealand
tel: 64 7 343 9132
www.mitai.co.nz
A four-acre land gifted by the Ngati Whakaue people to develop. The vision for this land was to redevelop the old pā (village) site, showcase Māori culture through Toi Whakaari (performing arts), and share the lifestyle of Māori.
Under the leadership of six-time national Manukura Tāne (male leader) Kapa Haka, Wetini Mitai-Ngatai, and the whānau (family) Mitai-Ngatai, Mitai Māori Village was established over 20 years ago. The beginnings of Mitai Māori Village started with almost bare whenua with no electricity, no running water, and only a couple of buildings.
Despite doubts about achieving the vision, little to no funding to support the development, and some negative thoughts and comments, the whānau pulled together and worked hard to turn their dreams into a successful business. Today, Mitai Māori Village proudly shares Te Ao Māori (Maoridom) with the world, and they are involved in environmental, humanitarian, social, and cultural events locally, nationally, and internationally.
This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The 3-hour show includes:
- Hangi dinner buffet
- Canoe demonstration
- Chieftain welcome ceremony
- Maori weapon demonstration
- Maori songs and dances
- Added bonus, pictures of glowworm in case you can’t make it to the Waitomo caves
You can take as many photos or videos as you desired and the staff is highly knowledgeable in their culture and history. If you visit Rotorua, you HAVE to experience the Mitai village.
